About
The 2019 Community Read Project is a collaboration between the town libraries and the local, regional high school. This project came about after reading the book, Waking Up White by Debby Irving. We learned of a program the author was doing with Shay Stewart-Boulet, whose media platform is Black Girl in Maine called Tell Me the Truth: Exploring the Heart of Cross-Racial Conversations. This led to a discussion about the lack of racial diversity in southern New Hampshire and in today's society, there is a much greater need for conversations to happen among community members about what it is to grow up white, and also to understand and empathize with those from other races.
The libraries have chosen to host book discussions on a variety of books, including Waking Up White by Debby Irving, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. For a full listing of all the book discussions, please check the calendar.
The kick-off event will be held in Portsmouth at the Temple Israel, where the Tell Me the Truth program will be held. This is part of the NH Heritage Trail in NH, and we are thankful they are allowing us to book tickets ahead of time. Please register for this program through the Kimball library site. (there are limited tickets, so please only sign-up if you are able to attend). Register HERE by Feb 21.
There will also be a mix of cultural programs, including cooking, movies, displays and music. The Timberlane Regional High School is bringing Flobots to the Timberlane Performing Arts Center on March 20, 2019 for a community presentation of No Enemies, based on the band's fourth album. The English Honor Society will be hosting the community event on March 20 at 7pm at high school. They will also be leading programs for the Timberlane High School students during the week.
The 2019 Community Read Project will be held from Sunday, March 4 - Thursday, April 17, 2019. Check out the calendar for a list of programs. All programs held at the libraries and the school are free and open to the public.
